Home | Great Bear Rainforest | Feeding in the Bubbles
Humpback Whales often employ quite complex and intelligent ways of feeding, and none are more complex and require more coordination than Bubble Feeding (or Bubble Netting). Some Humpback Whales will do it on their own, and it was funny when we watched one do it on his own until another Humpback Whale showed up and tried to participate, leaving the first whale angry and slapping the water until the other one went away.
In this image there were three to five Humpback Whales participating in the coordinated efforts of bubble feeding off the coast of British Columbia in the Great Bear Rainforest. If you look closely in this image you are able to see two other Humpbacks (just barely above the surface) that did not come out of the water quite as far as the one in the centre.
