Home | Great Bear Rainforest | Bubble Netting Buddies
Humpback Whales employ several different methods to get their nourishment and calories, bubble netting is one way. Bubble netting is typically done by more than one whale (although I have heard stories of one whale using a rock face in the water to assist with it bubble netting by itself), and it is a very complex, and organized, effort, with each whale in the group having different responsibilities. One whale will create noise to scare the fish into the bubbles being formed by another whale. The rest of the whales will use their bodies to corral the fish, and also scare the fish with the white undersides of their tales. Then in a coordinated effort, all the whales come up through the middle of the “net” and catch as many fish as possible.
