Home | Great Bear Rainforest | Spirit & Salmon
This year I went to the Great Bear Rainforest one week earlier than the previous two years. The result of going a week (or two) earlier than in the past is that as opposed to the bears just picking up dead salmon that had washed up on the shore, they instead were actively fishing and catching fish. This leads to much more action in the photography.
This image shows a Spirit Bear (or White Bear) right after it caught a salmon right in front of us. This Spirit Bear was one of the most successful fishing bears that we saw while on our 7 day trip. She just continuously pulled out fresh salmon and ate them right in front of us. Salmon are a very important part of the diet for the bears in this area, helping them build up their fat reserves before heading into hibernation.
