Spirit of the Great Bear Rainforest was taken in the Great Bear Rainforest in October 2014. This was my first trip into the Great Bear Rainforest and I was more than thrilled to actually have the opportunity to capture such a magnificent animal.
Spirit bears (also called White Bears or Kermode Bears) are actually white Black Bears, but with a recessive gene (no – they are not albino), and it is possible for a black bear to give birth to a white bear, or vice versa. This female actually had two black cubs of the year.
Although no one can say for sure, some scientists estimate that there are fewer than 500 Spirit Bears with a large population existing on Princess Royal Island, and very few white bears being found anywhere other than British Columbia.
