Leaping Lag

Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/wp-includes/shortcodes.php on line 553

A Pacific White-Sided Dolphin leaps out of the water while bow-riding our sailboat in the Johnstone Strait. I love the smooth blue waters and the wave that is created by the dolphin jumping out of the water.

These guys are a lot of fun to photograph, because they travel in large groups, and can be quite aerobatic.  While they can be a lot of fun for photographers, they are also known to be “thugs” and will harass other marine mammals, like humpback whales.

Pacific White-Sided Dolphins can weigh up to 100kg, and while that seems heavy, one of their main predators are Transient Killer Whales (which weigh up to 5000 kg). Speed is critical to their survival.
