Have you ever taken a photo and thought “well that isn’t going to turn out” because of the light (or lack of). Well that’s exactly what happened for this photo. After a few hours of walking we got back in the car right around dark (at 6:05pm in February), and started the drive home when my boyfriend spotted this owl perched in a unique spot. So we stopped, and given the angle of the tree mixed with the orange moss, I couldn’t not photograph it. But hearing the slow release of the shutter, I thought I don’t know why I’m bothering because these aren’t going to turn out.
Well boy, was I ever surprised when I loaded these images onto my computer several weeks later (again, I was in no rush because I didn’t think they turned out anyway). I couldn’t believe how sharp the image was, and with very little noise (at least not enough that couldn’t be cleaned up with variants in Capture One Pro). It’s photos like this taken under the strenuous conditions that really make me marvel over the quality of cameras and lenses, and the more expensive ones definitely prove their worth in times like this.
