Tree Swallow on barbed wire
Balancing on Barbed Wire

Every spring in the Alberta Prairies fence posts (and barbed wire) suddenly have new accessories in the form of iridescent blue Tree Swallows. These aerobatic little birds zip through the air and eat insects. They also protect their nests with the vigor of a bird 10 times it size, as I watched it attack a house sparrow that got too close to its territory.

This one was perched on the barbed wire protecting a nearby nest that was housed inside a bird box attached to the fence post.
