This was my first (and so far, only) Upland Sandpiper that I have photographed, and this was taken East of Calgary in July. Given that this is a bird that forages, and nests on the ground, it was a treat to photograph it on a fence post…meanwhile for some birds I wish I could photograph them anywhere other than a fence post.
What I like the most about this photo is how the bird stands out against the orange/yellow prairie fields in the background. For an image like this the aperture of the 500 f/4 (f/5.6 with the extender) really paid off in order to shoot wide-open and get the blurred smooth background, v.s. actually seeing parts of the grass if I wasn’t shooting wide open.
