Coastal Deer

The first photograph of a deer on the coast, and it didn’t disappoint.  This is a Sitka Deer, a species of Mule Deer that was introduced to Gwaii Haanas in the late 1800s and due to the lack of predators, the population has really exploded.  Also due to the lack of predators, most also didn’t seem to be very afraid of humans either, and it caused the deer to not really even look up at us very often.

What I liked about this photo was the beach and coast in the background along with the mist that was in the air. This made for a unique shot compared to those images that I am able to capture of Mule Deer in Alberta. We also lucked out that it had a nice velvety rack as well.
