“Brutus” is back from the dead. This large male Grizzly Bear once dominated and controlled the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. After not being seen for a couple years, everyone assumed that he must have passed away because he was over 30 years old, which is old for a wild Grizzly Bear.
To say I was thrilled to hear of reports that he was still alive is a bit of an understatement, and then to get the chance to photograph the “guy” that made the Khutzeymateen what it is today felt like a surreal moment.
He is looking a bit smaller than he used to, and there is the start of cataracts in one of his eyes, but he was still moving around the inlet quite a bit, and looked better than some other bears that I have seen. Here’s to hoping he has a few more good years in him.
