Grizzly Bear eating grass Khutzeymateen
Quintessence of the Khutzeymateen

You’re always warned not to go into a trip with a preconceived image of a photo you want, because you might miss what’s happening around you. Well I didn’t go into the Khutzeymateen envisioning this photo (because I didn’t know what to expect), but upon arriving and seeing this backdrop, I did think to myself, I would like a bear in front of those mountains.

If I could only show one image to exhibit what the Khutzeymateen looks like, it would be this image. It has depicts many of the elements at the core of the Khutzeymateen has to offer. Front and center is the Grizzly Bear enjoying sedge grass with a beautiful mountain backdrop, and I also think this Grizzly also seems quite at ease with our presences.

We were lucky enough to have this grizzly position itself right in front of the mountain backdrop, and look up with a mouthful of grass. This was tricky to photograph because you needed a small aperture in order to make sure that the mountains weren’t blurred, but also not so much that you had diffraction, in this case I went with f/11, and think it turned out well. In another sequence I tried a smaller aperture, and then stacked the layers to get both the bear and the mountains in focus.
