Without spending every day in the Khuzeymateen witnessing the interactions among the various Grizzly Bears it’s hard to know for sure who is the most dominant male, however this guy definitely ranks up there (in my opinion). He is certainly one of the larger males that I have seen in the area – with only one or two other bears that are as big or bigger – and he walks around like he owns the place.
I actually find him quite a difficult bear to photograph, this image being the exception, because he rarely will even give us his eyes. He is usually focused on something else, like eating or mating, which don’t always make for interesting shots. Despite his size and his demeanor, he wasn’t at all scary to be around, and tended to be quite tolerant in our efforts to get a good shot of him.
