During my Alaska Bald Eagle Adventure in 2016 we had the opportunity to see and photograph many different bald eagles, in different scenes and scenarios. This Bald Eagle happened to be the most accommodating and tolerant of all the Bald Eagles, sitting close by, and allowing us to get a very close-up head shot of the him.
Getting a shot this close lets you really see the different colors in the feathers from the whites on the tips and different shades of brown throughout. Even though they are called “Bald” Eagles, they are clearly not bald, because they have feathers on their heads. The name actually comes from an old English word “piebald” which means to have a “white head” instead of meaning being bald (or without hair).
