Here Fishy Fishy

A Grizzly Bear (shot during the fishing Grizzlies of the Taku) wading in the river stares intently into the water hoping to nab himself a fish. In areas where there are salmon runs, like on the Taku River and tributaries, Grizzly Bears will travel great distances in order to access the protein rich meals. Grizzly bears eat on average 30,000 calories per day, which is 12 times the average human diet of around 2500 calories a day. With an average sockeye salmon providing about 4500 calories (and that’s a high calorie meal) it’s no wonder when you see Grizzly Bears on rivers during salmon runs, they are constantly getting one fish after another, as they try to prep for the long winter ahead.

I wish we had more time with this particular male Grizzly Bear (and his female sibling) because he had such a unique look to him, with varying patches of red, blond, and even dark brown fur. And his sister actually had a large dark spot on her left shoulder. Well maybe this year (or even next year) we will get more time with them.
