Home | Great Bear Rainforest | Rooting in the Rain
Despite female Grizzly Bears weighing up to 175kg, and having a reputation that would lead you to believe that they take out full-grown elk or other animals on a frequent basis, that’s not always the case. This two year old Grizzly Bear cub, along with her sibling and mother, were actually spending the few times we saw them digging for, and eating roots. The rivers in this area did not have any salmon this year, so it’s amazing to see the bears adapt and find other food sources.
Grizzly bears have actually been built to dig. The hump of the Grizzly Bears along with their long claws actually help them dig these roots, unlike Black Bears which cannot dig like a Grizzly Bear can.
