Tree Hugger

This younger subadult male gave us a real show on our 2017 Fishing Grizzlies of the Taku trip when he decided to rub on a tree right next to the deck, it was simply an amazing experience.  This was one of two Grizzly Bears that rubbed on this tree.  Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the bear came quickly and the tree was close-by, so it wasn’t easy to fit the entire bear in the frame at 100mm.

Grizzly Bears rub on trees to leave their scent and let other bears know that they are in the area (and sometimes to scratch an itch that cannot be reached). If you have ever seen a rub tree in person, the bark actually feels smooth from the bears all rubbing on it.
